Annual leaf removal process begins

The first major leaf roundup of the fall season took place on the Terrace today.

There's more to come, but now you can see the grass again!

Here are some images of the work detail in action.

Holiday luncheon date, venue verified

Holiday luncheon destination.

Event coordinator Janice Dessingue reports that she has locked in Thursday, December 15, for a 12:30 p.m. Terrace Holiday Luncheon at McGreivey's in Waterford.

She and Anne Hunter will meet with chef-owner Art Riley at McGreivey's next week to firm up the menu and pricing. We then will share the details with everyone who has made a reservation.

FYI, for the comfort of all the event will be a sit-down luncheon rather than a buffet, and the restaurant is handicap accessible.

McGrievey's is located at 91 Broad Street, the main street in the Village of Waterford.

THCA Party Time! Can you join us?

We're planning to resume our seasonal social activities, which had been derailed by the pandemic.

Janice Dessingue is chairing the committee planning a Holiday Luncheon get-together at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, December 15. Although that date may seem a long way off, the lead time actually is brief, so we'll need your cooperation to help in the planning.

We have two potential venues -- McGrievey's in the Village of Waterford and Van Schaick Island Country Club in Cohoes -- but each needs to know a headcount ASAP so they can provide details as to menu, price, physical event layout, etc. We're presuming a per-person cost in the range of $35-$45, plus cash bar, but that still is up in the air.

So, we need to know NO LATER than this Sunday (October 23) if your household will be represented at the party, and by how many people. To RSVP, please RESPOND DIRECTLY TO THIS EMAIL by Sunday. (Responding any other way tends to muddle the results and we need an accurate headcount quickly.)

The response at Monday's member meeting to the suggestion of resuming Terrace seasonal social events was very positive, so we're hoping this holiday party will be a strong start toward that goal.

Thanks for your cooperation!

City rejects request for regular Hyland Court plowing

The THCA, through Tom Wade and our City Councilman Jim Gulli, has inquired about the possibility of the city Department of Public Utilities providing snow removal services on a regular schedule for Hyland Court.

For context, DPU trucks do plow Hyland Circle and Hyland Drive, which are dedicated city streets. It has occasionally done the Court, which is not a city street, at the intercession of Gulli, but that has not been a formal, scheduled part of the city plowing pattern.

The city's response to our request, from DPU Superintendent Chris Wheland, says:

"We have not [regularly] plowed Hyland Court. Last year a contractor plowed [it], Hyland Circle and Drive also. The concern with the half-circles is we do not plow out driveways and have nowhere to put the snow. Many times these areas are contracted and if we plow them and disturb the grass areas the contractor is on the hook to replace the grass, [and] landscape and edge of driveways.

"Most times in the Terrace and Highpointe we meet up with the contractor with the first or second storm and negotiate where we plow and where the contractor plows. This avoids us getting in each other's way or being responsible for others' screw-ups.

"At this point it would be difficult to add any plow routes to our list as we can barely keep up with them now. Although a small area, the turn, driveways and parking area make it very difficult to plow this area."

Thus, we will have to continue relying on our private contractor to handle plowing and snow moving surfaces on all Terrace roads, private driveways, and walkways.

COVID-19 case on the Terrace

Terrace Neighbors:

Nancy Victor just informed us that John has tested, and re-tested, positive for COVID-19 today.

All of us who attended Monday's Association meeting should be alert for any of the COVID symptoms healthcare agencies have shared with the public over the past 2+ years, and alert anyone outside the household you may have come in contact with.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms usually appear 2 to 14 days after contact. Click here to go to the CDC webpage that explains symptoms.

Daylight Saving Time ends in just 20 days

Get ready to adjust your chronometers, people.  It's that time of year. Remember, spring forward, fall back.

Daylight Saving (no "s" at the end) Time will end on Sunday, November 6, just 20 days from now.

Party time! So, we need your help

THCA President Bill Dowd suggested at Monday's member meeting that we resume a schedule of social events that our community once sponsored on a regular basis now that the worst -- we hope! -- of the COVID pandemic has subsided.

That was met with general agreement by attendees, and in particular Janice Dessingue and Ellie DeBonis who quickly stepped up to plan some events.

For those who more recently joined the Terrace community, at one time we regularly held summer potluck picnics and bocce competitions on the common grounds under a party tent on the interior circle of the Terrace, celebrated holiday dinners at various banquet sites, etc. We also have enjoyed such activities as mobile pizza parties and corn hole tournaments.

While Ellie has agreed to recruit a committee to discuss and plan various seasonal activities, Janice expressed a desire to kick off renewed plans by creating a Christmas holiday dinner at McGrievey's restaurant in nearby Waterford.

These developments are mentioned because we hope to interest other Terrace residents in volunteering to help Ellie and Janice in making such activities come to fruition. So, if this piques your curiosity, please make a point of contacting either or both of them ASAP to pitch in.

Here's to resuming a once-vibrant aspect of communal life on the Terrace.

Register now for City's 2nd annual Pumpkin Smash

In a few weeks, many people will be getting rid of pumpkins and gourds that have decorated their homes this fall. But, the trick is to dispose of them in an environmentally sound way.

The City of Troy's 2nd annual "Pumpkin Smash" is one way to do that.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 5, says an announcement, "The City will host 'Pumpkin Smash' to keep food scraps out of the landfill and promote composting. Local families will have the opportunity to bash, crush, and clobber leftover pumpkins from the season at Knickerbacker Park in Lansingburgh, keeping materials like pumpkins and food scraps allows for them to be utilized in gardens and green spaces as finished compost.”

The event, for Troy residents only, requires advance registration no later than November 3. That can be done by clicking here.

Participants will be able to bring old pumpkins, gourds, and jack-o-lanterns to be smashed in front of the ice rink building in the park (located at 103rd Street and 8th Avenue). The scraps will be brought to the Town of Bethlehem’s composting facility, keeping them out of local landfills. Pumpkins and gourds should be paint-free and glitter free if they are to be composted. All lights, candle wax, and decorations also must be removed.

Reminder: Meeting date and proxy process

We checked with the Faith Lutheran Church office today to confirm their meeting room for our 7 p.m Monday, October 17, membership meeting there. So, unless they make a last-minute change to the schedule, we're on!

While we hope to have a large turnout since this will be our first in-person meeting in a long time because of the COVID restrictions, if you do not plan to join us you nevertheless can be counted toward the presence of a quorum and, if desired, have your vote counted on any business matters. You can make that happen via proxy.

Back on September 16, we emailed all residents a call for proxies and on the same date posted on The Terrace Times an explanation of the procedure. If somehow you missed those communications, you can read the info by clicking here. Reminder: The deadline for submitting proxies is this coming Friday, October 14.

Troy getting yet another one-way street

One of the negatives about navigating traffic in the City of Troy is its large number of one-way streets. Well, brace yourself. Here comes another one.

As of 5 a.m. Monday, October 17, Washington Street will permanently change from being a two-way thoroughfare to one-way with traffic flowing westbound only between 5th Avenue and River Street. The affected road runs along the north side of Washington Park.

An announcement from the City of Troy explains, "The change will address safety concerns related to the limited width of the street, especially noticeable during the winter months."
